Gaby Michel releases the delightful single 'What Would Dolly Do?', a folk-tinged country track with a fantastic, universal message at its core...
This a track from musician Gaby Michel after 15 years of musical silence. Life events meant Michel stopped singing and making music, yet when Covid hit, she turned back to her old roots, and created this single. This is a truly charming song about looking for direction within this life. In an ode to Dolly Parton and to fate itself - where worlds collide and people cross paths - the song encourages us all to find hope in even the most unusual of places. The melodies are ultra-memorable, particularly in the chorus, and the instrumentation is flawless. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. If you're after a track to ease your Covid blues, this is it. Bring on Summer.
In the artist's own words:
"I was 12 years old when I first heard “Here You Come Again,” by Dolly Parton. I’ll never forget that moment because it was what I would call a soul moment. A soul moment is when you first see (or hear in my case) someone and instantly know they are going to be a significant influence in your life. A soul moment is when you know something with every fiber of your being. When that song came on the radio, I knew Dolly would be a big part of my life and that I wanted to be a singer. I trained as a vocalist for 25 years and decided to sing spiritual music. In April of 2004, I released my first CD. Within a six-month period, I lost my brother, my dear friend and my baby daughter. I didn’t sing another note for 15 years.
Cut to 2020: I’m the Youth Education Director at my church, and COVID hits! I had to figure out how to provide lessons for the kids in an entertaining way. So, I learned the ukulele, bought a microphone and produced mini Sunday school videos each week. As the year went on, I learned how to record in GarageBand and started writing songs.
Our world has become so divided during a time when we should be coming together. There is literally only one topic we can all agree on and that is Dolly Parton. That’s where I got the inspiration for “What Would Dolly Do?.” My wish for this song is that it will make people smile and maybe make them think."
