Born and raised in Vancouver, David July is a hip-hop recording artist and singer-songwriter. Having most recently released his brilliant new single Break The Ice, we catch up with David July in this exclusive interview...
So firstly, how would you describe your sound?
I feel like I try to make music for different settings. Feelings and emotions always change, and as a human myself, I’m gonna wanna listen to different moods in different times and situations. I try to make music for people needing to relate to something, for people to chill and relax listening to, and for people wanting to let loose and have a good time. I guess it can be for everyone.
What’s a typical day in the studio like for you?
When we start a new track, we either start from scratch with the guitar or on the computer, or my producer shows me a beat he’s already been working on. When we got some sort of instrumental going, I’d hop in the booth to start coming up with a layout for the track. After we got the layout for the track, we finish it up by putting the lyrics together and recording it all. If we already got something recorded when we get to the studio, usually we gonna finish that track up before we start something up again.
Do you have to be in a certain mood to write a song?
It really depends how I’m feeling that day. Like maybe I’m feelin good and just wanna mess around and bring the energy up, or maybe I’m tryna make something more chill because that’s the vibe I’m feeling in that moment.
Who are your biggest musical inspirations?
Artists I listened to since I was a kid, like Kanye, Wayne, Em, and Ice Cube started my love for Hip hop and Rap. Music I really relate to inspires me too though. More recent artists like X and Juice showed sides of themselves that most people don’t talk about a lot.
What’s the most enjoyable part of the industry?
Getting to meet and work with new people to make music gotta be one of the things I enjoy the most. Making music itself is the passion, but collaborating with other artists, producers, and whoever else, is just something to add on to it. Interacting with fans/supporters is also really dope.
What do you have in store for 2022?
Live performances in and around Vancity, more singles, and my first small project. A lot more growth and bigger announcements.
