Songwriter and producer Collin Keller has shared his newest single “404 error,” a melancholy indie rock track with subtle pop sensibilities.

The single captures a potent emotional resonance as Keller processes the feeling of growing up alongside someone, and eventually losing them. The title and hook’s reference to the “404 page not found” web error message reflects this emptiness felt when reflecting upon what once was. “404 error” is a heartfelt, intimate track, using digital terminology to explore deeply human experiences.

Born in Vail, Colorado, and based in Los Angeles, Colin Keller has built a career as a songwriter and touring musician. He has held past stints including fronting the project luhx., guitarist for Dutch Melrose, and appearances in The Life and Music of George Michael, Dirty Dancing in Concert, and The Simon & Garfunkel Story. Keller has also appeared at Osheaga and Switchyard Music Festival. Influenced by indie rockers like mk.gee, The Lone Bellow, and John Mayer, “404 error” is a continuation of Colin Keller’s artistic journey. Fully written, performed, produced, and mixed by Keller, the project is a testament to his self-driven creative approach.

The instrumental world of “404 error” is built on a warm, textural acoustic guitar lick, which keeps the song moving forward through its otherwise sparse verses. This lick is eventually joined by airy synths and electric guitars in the choruses, giving the song a sense of space that makes its instrumentation appear larger. A light trumpet line eventually joins the fray, which gives the track some needed ornamentation. “404 error” has the sonic palette of a day at the beach, but its subtle build from beginning to end gives it substance that helps the track’s emotional resonance.

Lyrically, Keller pairs the digital “404 error” metaphor with sentiments exploring the transformative nature of love over time. The chorus - “Maybe you’re holding, like I’m holding you with me on the daily / Your impact carries on,” - is the single’s emotional crux: that when love ends, its impact and memory lingers and changes over time. Keller draws parallels to La La Land, with the line “And I’m hoping that the day our eyes remeet, that we can smile like Mia and Sebastian” echoing the sentiment of two people crossing paths in another life, knowing that no matter what, the love they shared still mattered. Keller’s tender and candid lyricism is on full display in “404 error” - the song effortlessly weaves sentiments sourced from all places into a cohesive monument to lost love.

In “404 error,” Colin Keller’s wholly individual approach to music shines brilliantly. Every aspect of the single - the production, the instrumentation, the lyrics, the performance - work in tandem to create an emotionally potent single as relatable as it is catchy. The titular error message may appear cold and unfeeling, but “404 error” shines in its warmth and nuance. Over the course of the single’s subtle build, it’s impossible to not be won over by Keller - even as he processes what he lost.
