Brooklyn-based duo Dancing In Tongues return with their haunting new single “Petri Dish,” a delicate yet emotionally charged piece that drifts between ambient electronics and avant-pop abstraction. Serving as the first glimpse into their upcoming four-track EP of the same name, due July 3rd, the track marks a striking continuation of their ability to turn deeply personal experience into immersive sonic worlds.
Written and produced in Berlin alongside Lucas Herweg (LLUCID) and Jacob Bergson (TAUT), operating under their collaborative production alias Designer, “Petri Dish” finds the duo refining their signature blend of crystalline vocals, atmospheric textures, and fluid, shape-shifting rhythm. The result is a composition that feels suspended in time, quietly shifting between fragility and control, stillness and movement.
Comprised of vocalist Sarah Martin-Nuss and drummer/producer David Nuss, Dancing In Tongues have long operated in the space where emotional intimacy meets sonic experimentation. “Petri Dish” may be one of their most affecting releases to date, unfolding as a soft, luminous soundscape built on restraint rather than excess. Shimmering synth layers ebb and flow beneath Martin-Nuss’s understated vocal delivery, while subtle rhythmic pulses mirror the emotional tension embedded in the track’s core.
At its heart, the song draws from the duo’s experience with IVF, transforming a private and often isolating journey into something quietly universal. The process of waiting—of holding hope in uncertain conditions, becomes the emotional centre of the track, shaping its sense of suspended motion and fragile anticipation.
“Petri Dish was written during IVF, an experience that revealed how quickly hope can take hold, even amid uncertainty,” the duo explain. That duality runs throughout the song: scientific process meets emotional vulnerability, control collides with unpredictability, and hope persists even in moments of doubt.
Rather than leaning into dramatic resolution, “Petri Dish” thrives in ambiguity. Its beauty lies in its restraint, in the way it captures feeling without forcing a conclusion. The production remains airy and minimal, yet richly textured, allowing space for each sonic detail to breathe.
With this release, Dancing In Tongues continue to carve out a distinct identity within the electronic and indie experimental landscape. “Petri Dish” stands as a testament to their ability to translate complex emotional states into sound that is both intimate and expansive, inviting listeners into a space where fragility itself becomes a form of strength.
