There’s a cinematic glow to Sky Fish Fly, the latest offering from kazaizen, that feels both intimate and otherworldly.
Jonny Kasai crafts a universe where sound becomes texture, mood, and movement—an immersive listening experience that unfolds like a dream you don’t quite want to wake from.
The album opens with a swirl of colour and rhythm. “Nanoo Nanoo” and “Make It Love” pulse with a hypnotic energy, balancing groove and haze in equal measure. It’s music that feels tactile—warm analogue synths and echoing guitars wrapping around soulful vocal lines like light through stained glass.
At its heart, Sky Fish Fly is about transformation. “What Is” captures this beautifully, evoking a ghost of 70s soul that’s been stretched and reshaped into something entirely new.
“What’s the Meaning – Self” brings a city-pop sensibility into the mix, but refracts it through kazaizen’s distinctly experimental lens.
There’s also a playful curiosity woven throughout. “Mr. Musk” stands out as a moment of narrative whimsy, blending humour with sonic experimentation as it imagines an interplanetary journey gone delightfully sideways. In contrast, “State of Mind” offers a more introspective moment, its layered textures building into a soft, enveloping haze.
In the end, Sky Fish Fly feels like an exploration of perception itself. It’s soulful yet strange, grounded yet cosmic. Kasai doesn’t just create songs—he builds environments, inviting listeners to step inside and see the world, if only briefly, from a different angle.
"With Sky Fish Fly, kazaizen invites listeners on a journey through sound that’s playful, introspective, and utterly fearless,” says music publicist Danielle Holian, Decent Music PR. “Jonny Kasai blends psychedelic soul, shoegaze, jazz, and city pop into a universe where every track feels alive, like flipping through a cosmic radio dial at midnight. It’s music that’s lo-fi, immersive, and impossible to categorise, but impossible to forget.”
