Electronic project mokroïé, the multidisciplinary creation of composer and producer Francesco Virgilio, explores existence, mortality, adolescence and loss on new EP ‘Unanswered’, a four-track journey accompanied by a series of cinematic films.

Blending progressive electronics, organic instrumentation and psychedelic textures, Unanswered moves between the infinite scale of the cosmos and the intimate complexities of human emotion. Rather than offering definitive answers, the project embraces uncertainty, exploring the mysteries that shape our understanding of life.

The EP unfolds across two distinct halves, Outside and Inside, each approaching those questions from a different perspective. The first looks towards nature, space and existence, while the second turns inward to examine adolescence, melancholy and the emotional aftermath of loss.

Opening instrumental ‘Eternity’ establishes the record’s philosophical foundations, exploring the tension between the instinct to live and the inevitability of death. Sparkling electronic textures intertwine with organic instrumentation, creating a soundscape that connects the earthly with the cosmic.

‘Over The Clouds’ continues that outward journey through a luminous, dreamlike atmosphere, gradually introducing darker undertones before finding resolution in ethereal piano.

The EP’s second half begins with ‘Teenage Sunday Sadness’, which captures the contradictions of adolescence. Initially bright and carefree, the track gradually gives way to an inexplicable melancholy, reflecting the strange emotional shifts that can accompany growing up.

Closing track ‘Negative Space’ introduces the EP’s only vocal performance, featuring Alison Thom of Australian band Howlite. Combining ethereal electro-pop with delicate orchestral arrangements, the song explores grief, absence and the emotional void left behind by someone we love.

A whispered French phrase, “l’attente d’un retour”, meaning the waiting for a return, reinforces its atmosphere of longing.

The collaboration follows mokroïé’s previous electro-orchestral remix of Howlite’s ‘Blood Type’, a dramatic reimagining that the band and their publisher described as “the soundtrack to the next John Wick!”

Beyond the music, Unanswered extends into visual storytelling, with each of its four tracks accompanied by a dedicated music video. Created as extensions of the compositions, the films incorporate cosmic imagery, vast skies, rain-soaked landscapes and fragments of everyday life, establishing a connection between sound and image.

That multidisciplinary approach has become central to Virgilio’s work. Moving between electronic, rock, pop and industrial influences alongside elements of jazz, soul and global music, mokroïé operates as an experimental space where musical composition and visual narrative develop together.

Previous collaborations have included spoken-word artist Allonymous, drummers Dave Collingwood and Cyril Atef, and Pulitzer Prize and World Press Photo-winning photojournalist Sergey Ponomarev, who contributed to the 2017 multidisciplinary EP GLOBAL - SYSTEM - ERROR.

Across releases including Machines & Soul, WORKS2K21 and Moving Forward, Virgilio has continued to explore the relationship between electronic experimentation and human experience.

With Unanswered, that exploration becomes particularly introspective. Moving from cosmic wonder to teenage uncertainty and the lingering pain of absence, mokroïé creates an immersive audiovisual experience that finds meaning not in resolving life's biggest questions, but in confronting the emotions they leave behind.
