Rapper SKIP-DAWG Makes Comeback After Nearly a Decade Battling Serious Lung Complications

Veteran rapper SKIP-DAWG makes a remarkable return to music with his latest single, ‘Lyrical Playboy’, following nearly a decade away from recording after suffering more than 20 collapsed lungs and undergoing eight major lung surgeries.
Blending hip-hop, seductive R&B and touches of alternative rock, the single explores the contrast between the man behind the music and the confident, larger-than-life persona that emerges when he steps behind the microphone.
“‘Lyrical Playboy’ is really about the two sides of me,” SKIP-DAWG explains. “There’s the regular person I am in everyday life, and then there’s SKIP-DAWG, a more confident and expressive version of myself that comes out through the music.”
The release marks a significant milestone for the Havertown, Pennsylvania artist, whose career was interrupted by a life-threatening lung condition. Having previously released five albums, SKIP-DAWG spent close to a decade away from recording while undergoing extensive medical treatment.
Despite his return, the rapper continues to experience significant nerve damage and severe chronic chest pain following his surgeries.
Alongside his musical comeback, SKIP-DAWG is now using his platform to raise awareness of recurrent collapsed lungs and the long-term challenges faced by sufferers.
“After living with Bleb Disease for 20 years, after having tried an extraordinary number of measures to manage my chronic health and lung issues, and now after having read thousands of personal accounts astonishingly similar to mine, I feel resolved to speak on behalf of a club that no one wants to belong to: collapsed lung sufferers,” he says.
“Our condition is marked by extraordinary, life-interrupting pain and trauma, from the initial lung collapse to the medical interventions and surgeries, lengthy and painful recoveries, and all-too-frequent complications like nerve damage.”
Through the Collapsed Lung Project, SKIP-DAWG hopes to bring greater visibility to the physical and emotional impact of recurrent lung collapses, drawing on his own experiences to advocate for others facing similar challenges.
Musically, ‘Lyrical Playboy’ combines introspective verses with a sensual R&B refrain, balancing reflection with the swagger and confidence that have long defined his artistic identity.
With five albums to his name and music placements across NBC, the NFL and Grand Theft Auto, SKIP-DAWG has established a career spanning multiple releases and platforms.
His latest single represents more than a return to recording. It marks the rediscovery of an artistic identity after years of serious illness, while providing an opportunity to raise awareness of a condition that has profoundly shaped his life.
With ‘Lyrical Playboy’, SKIP-DAWG reclaims his voice, his confidence and his place behind the microphone, determined to make music again while ensuring the experiences of recurrent collapsed lung sufferers are heard.
