Rising from Quarantine: The Lower Aetna's Journey from Solitary Dream to Sonic Revelation

Emerging from the depths of a quarantined apartment at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Lower Aetna began as a solitary dream for songwriter Dylan Gallimore. After his previous project, Honeyjar, announced an indefinite hiatus, Gallimore, sick with the then-novel Coronavirus, found solace in a new creative outlet. This outlet grew into The Lower Aetna, a dynamic and evolving experiment in genre and storytelling.

Launching the project wrapped in an afghan knitted by his mom, Gallimore quickly enlisted the help of singer Kayla Rae Molocznik, his Honeyjar bandmate and childhood best friend. Named after a South Jersey lake from Gallimore’s childhood, The Lower Aetna was conceived as a haven for retreat and boundless creative exploration.

The band’s 2022 debut album, Waiting For God To Turn On The Lights, is a stadium rock concept album that delves into the impact of online conspiracies on families. Their forthcoming album, Pine, slated for release in September, draws from Gallimore’s experiences as a queer man in South Jersey’s Pine Barrens, blending folk, alt-country, and classic rock influences.

Returning with their latest single, "Blood Moon," The Lower Aetna delves into a mysterious, moody alt-country and indie fusion. Featuring an array of instruments including drums, bass, acoustic guitar, resonator guitar, electric guitar, pedal steel guitar, keys, and three-part vocal harmonies, "Blood Moon" encapsulates the band’s evolving sound.

‘Blood Moon’ tells the story of a lonely gay farmhand seeking human connection, inspired by Gallimore’s experiences as a closeted teenager working on a farm. Recorded and produced in various homes around Philadelphia, the track is a testament to DIY production. It also features contributions from Philadelphia pedal steel legend Mike "Slo-Mo" Brenner (Wild Pink, Songs: Ohia).
