Perth's SCIZZORMAN have always occupied a fascinating space outside of convention, and on new single "Mystical Yeast" they continue to prove that distance from the industry's major hubs has only strengthened their creative identity.
Lifted from the forthcoming concept album How To Get Your Life Right With What's Left, the track arrives as an effortlessly confident statement from a band that has spent two decades refining an unmistakable musical language.
Built upon an irresistibly elastic funk groove, "Mystical Yeast" refuses to settle into one stylistic lane. Neo-psychedelia, glam-pop flair, progressive rock ambition and soulful rhythmic instincts all intertwine without feeling forced, resulting in a composition that feels simultaneously nostalgic and refreshingly modern. While echoes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Talking Heads and Frank Zappa inevitably surface, SCIZZORMAN never sound like imitators—they're simply speaking a similar musical dialect through their own lens.
Lyrically, the track balances satire with escapism, poking fun at fashionable anxieties and the endless cycle of first-world gossip before drifting into a colourful mythical landscape. Rather than preaching, songwriter Terry J Vinci offers listeners an invitation to detach from the trivial and embrace imagination. That duality gives "Mystical Yeast" far more substance than its playful title initially suggests.
The musicianship is equally compelling. Vinci and bassist Cody Robson lock together with remarkable chemistry, creating a rhythm section that feels lived-in rather than rehearsed. Stewart Herbertson's guitar work continually elevates the arrangement, particularly during the eastern-inspired bridge before unleashing a soaring solo that provides the song's emotional climax. Every addition serves the groove without overcrowding it.
Perhaps the most impressive quality is how naturally the recording breathes. Produced independently by SCIZZORMAN and engineered by Adrian Vinci, the performance retains the spontaneity of musicians creating together in the room. There's a looseness throughout that gives the song genuine personality, avoiding the over-polished sheen that often strips funk-rock of its vitality.
