Default User’s debut EP Rotation Demon arrives with the kind of gritty mystique that feels inseparable from New York’s underground nightlife.

The collaborative project between Aria Noonan and William Lakritz (5thPlanet) channels years of DIY experimentation into a record that feels built for dimly lit warehouses and long after-hours sessions. Drawing from techno, trance, ambient, and noise, the duo deliver a six-track release that thrives on atmosphere without sacrificing dancefloor momentum.

Opening track “Bad Gateway” kicks things off with a restless pulse, weaving fractured percussion through shimmering synth layers that feel equally nostalgic and forward-looking. There’s a clear love for classic club energy here, but Default User never allow the track to settle into predictable territory. Instead, textures crackle and dissolve around the beat, creating a sound that feels alive and slightly unstable.

“Paradise Planet” expands that sense of exploration. Bright, euphoric synth lines swirl above driving rhythms, hinting at classic trance influences while maintaining a darker, more ambiguous mood. It’s a track that feels like a rave dream—one that’s both exhilarating and faintly unsettling.

Midway through the EP, “Rubber Moses” shifts the tone into grittier territory. Mechanical percussion and abrasive textures echo the industrial landscapes that inspired the project, giving the track a sense of urban tension. From there, “Xhemicals” launches into a cosmic detour, layering pulsating synths and expansive atmospheres that stretch the EP’s club foundations into something more psychedelic.

Closing track “Amnesia” gently dissolves the energy into a reflective ambient haze, offering a moment of emotional release after the EP’s restless journey. With Rotation Demon, Default User prove themselves capable of bridging the gap between experimental sound design and club functionality—a debut that feels both adventurous and deeply rooted in underground culture.

“Rotation Demon is a striking debut that feels both futuristic and deeply personal,” says  Danielle Holian, Decent Music PR. “Default User has created a world that pulls from the grit of New York’s underground and the emotional depth of ambient and trance, resulting in a record that’s as immersive on headphones as it is on a dancefloor. It’s rare to hear a project that balances experimentation and accessibility so naturally; this is just the beginning for them.”
