jqime’s “talk to me” doesn’t aim for resolution so much as reflection. Filtering a familiar adolescent narrative through three distinct viewpoints, the band lean into dissonance and ambiguity, allowing contradiction to sit at the centre of the track. It’s a song defined as much by its silences and gaps as its hooks — bright synth lines and restless guitar work that never quite settle. Ahead of the release, we caught up with jqime to talk about perspective, restraint, and why clarity isn’t always the goal.
Welcome to Curious For Music! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest release?
Our new single ‘talk to me’ explores themes of undefined relationships, miscommunication, and teenage desires. This song conveys a sense of possibility in a relationship, and the emotional uncertainties that come with it. Our goal was to create an upbeat song with a feel-good vibe. We were inspired by artists such as Chappell Roan and The 1975, while taking an underlying influence from The Beatles.
What was the creative process like for this project?
I, Jaime, wrote this song back in 2024 when I was 15. My music teacher told me I could perform at the school's music night, but I needed a band to back me. Writing for a band context was something that I was unfamiliar with, not to mention the fact there was no band to be writing for in the first place. After talking around, I ended up getting in touch with 2 musicians I had previously worked with, Samuel (bassist) and Hector (drummer and producer). This high school project turned into the trio now known as jqime. When I presented ‘talk to me’ to the band, there were only chords and lyrics. Together we figured out an arrangement, and a week later performed it to an audience of 400! 2 years down the line we recorded and released it.
How does this new release differ from your previous work?
We wrote ‘talk to me’ to be a fun song, more uplifting than our usual work in the hopes we could have an upbeat original to perform.
Were there any particular challenges you faced while making this music?
Originally we had booked a studio to record ‘talk to me.’ Two sessions in, the band broke up, and we didn’t perform together for eight months following that. Slowly but surely, we were able to move past this rough patch and our music got all the more emotional and meaningful for it.
Did you collaborate with any other artists or producers on this project?
We did not.
What message or emotion do you hope listeners take away from this release?
We hope the listener can share the excitement and energy we felt making this song. ‘Talk to me’ gradually builds up to this cinematic-like bridge, where we envision people screaming the lyrics along with us.
Is there a story or concept that ties the songs together?
The perks of being a teenager; exploring confusing and undefined relationships while navigating school, friends, and external dramas, are themes that appear in all of our releases to date.
How has your sound or style evolved on this release compared to your earlier work?
Talk to me is in a significantly faster tempo than our last releases, which helps it lean into the upbeat sound. With a synth driven and instrumental chorus, ‘talk to me’ is a standout song in our discography.
Is there a track in your music discography that feels especially meaningful to you? What makes it stand out?
Our song ‘november’ is very special to us. I, Jaime, even got it tattooed on the back of my arm! I wrote this song when I was 14 and at the lowest point I have ever been in my life. I mean you can kind of tell - the lyrics were just constantly emphasising how alone I felt. How crazy a turnout it was to be recording this song a few years later with my two best friends, Samuel and Hector. I’ve been performing ‘november’ since 2023 and it still brings me to tears by the end every single time.
How do you plan to share this release with your audience? Are there any upcoming performances, videos, or special projects in the works?
We have a lineup of posts to roll out following the release, and are headlining 3 shows this month which we will definitely be playing ‘talk to me’ at! There will also be a music video released for it next Saturday. ‘Talk to me’ is part of a bigger project that we are currently working on and can’t wait for you all to hear!
