Joshu’s "Way Back Home" EP Is A Journey of Self-Discovery

Indie-folk artist Joshu’s third EP, Way Back Home, emerges as an emotionally charged exploration of belonging and identity. After a life-altering breakup, Joshu embarked on a transformative journey across the Atlantic Ocean, retracing a path from his birthplace in southern England to the island of Antigua, where he was raised. The EP is deeply reflective, drawing from his experiences at sea and the solitude it brought. Each of the five tracks intricately weaves themes of identity, place, and human connection, ultimately creating a poignant soundscape that speaks to universal feelings of displacement.

The title track, "Way Back Home," serves as the heart of the EP, capturing Joshu’s raw emotions while sailing across the vast ocean. "I began to question what it truly means to belong," he shares. The song’s evolving melody reflects his journey through grief, hope, and surrender, growing into an anthem of introspection. The rest of the EP follows suit, with each song delving deeper into the complexities of home and belonging, as Joshu wonders: is home where you're born, or where you're raised?

Way Back Home, was written and self-produced in Antigua, over the course of 2024. Joshu’s delicate vocals intertwine with lush instrumentation, creating a tender yet expansive sonic landscape that invites listeners into his world. His growth as a producer, mixer, and songwriter is palpable, as the EP shows a level of maturity that elevates his sound. The carefully crafted soundscape is a testament to his artistry, inviting the listener to reflect on their own notions of home and identity.

The EP’s themes are both personal and universal. While Joshu reflects on his own experiences as a second-generation white man in the Caribbean, the songs echo a collective longing for connection in a fragmented world. Through his intimate sound, he urges us to reclaim our sense of belonging, not just to a place, but to the people and environment that sustain us. In an age of increasing alienation, Way Back Home, is a gentle yet compelling reminder of the importance of connection.

Joshu’s upbringing on the twin-island nation of Antigua & Barbuda has deeply influenced his music, blending folk legends like John Martyn with the rhythmic pulse of calypso. Way Back Home, reflects this eclectic background, blending soothing indie-folk with subtle Caribbean grooves. It’s a beautiful testament to his roots, while also showcasing his evolution as an artist.
